***THERE ARE SPOILERS IN MY REVIEW***
Okay, so here's my thoughts on the Fullmetal Alchemist live action movie:
It was AMAZING. It absolutely isn't canon to the original series or to Brotherhood and the manga, but it was amazing all the same. The graphics were lit, they even flawlessly brought the Nina/Alexander chimera to life. Gluttony was epically done considering what they were working with. He's not an exact copy given it was an actual actor playing him, but he's damn close. Envy and Lust were on point down to the littlest details; major kudos to that casting decision; and you could even tell Envy was a guy the first time he opened his mouth (it took me forever to figure out that Envy wasn't a girl in both series lol), so was Al's suit of armor.
Mustang could have been done a bit better, you can tell it's him, but his look is off; however, they did a great job with the casting for Hughes; Hughes' wife is a different matter all together. The actress was far prettier than the character actually was and her hair wasn't even attempted to be done like it is in either anime. I wasn't pleased with Winry either, especially since her signature blonde hair was missing, but the actress nailed her personality beautifully.
Another beautifully brought to life piece is the very beginning. While the Equivelant Exchange quote isn't there, the story of their mother's death and their first alchemic attempt to bring her back is. So is the how (with visuals) to Ed losing his arm and leg and Al losing his body. It was all perfectly done; including the end result. However, Ed's golden eye color is missing, his eyes are blue in the movie.
What's missing from the movie is the story that puts Ed through the exams, the main reason he was even at Shou Tucker's place to begin with, because of how close Tucker lived to where the exams were being held. The entire back story to how Ed first became a dog of the military is gone. It wasn't needed and honestly, in a two hour movie insignificant things like that aren't necessary. We don't need it. Hughes' kid being born is AWOL too, again, it's filler anyway; ALL the filler from both series is missing. What IS there is the door and the things beyond it and that like the other effects was done flawlessly. Even Al's body is brought to life nicely.
Izumi, a.k.a. "Teacher", her husband are missing, so in turn the birth of Wrath and Wrath himself are missing from the movie. Pride, Sloth and Greed, along with Scar and Rose are all missing from the movie as well. These missing characters saddened me. The general doesn't have his eye patch which hid the mark in his eye (which was also absent). These were all key characters to both anime series and to the manga. I felt a little jipped with them being absent.
The movie's end is a slight tearjerker and will irritate those who have seen the COMPLETE original anime (this includes the ending of the series, which is a movie entitled: The Conqueror of Shamballa), so I warn you to be ready for the lump in the throat that is sure to find you.
All in all, I'd totally watch it again because FMA has to be one of my top five favorite animes and I need all the things (ask me about my state alchemist pocket watch XD), so I absolutely intend to get the bluray when it releases on April 18.
To those complaining about how it's so different from everything else, remember, the original anime strayed from the manga too. It's why Brotherhood became a thing because Brotherhood IS canon to the manga. Just because it's different, doesn't make it bad >~.^<
